Joseph Johnston began collecting oil paintings by Maya artists in the 1980s when he first met the Tz'utuhil Maya community of Pedro la Laguna in Guatemala. Through his close and continuing relationship with the artists in the towns around Lake Atitlán, Joseph created online access to their art and survival resources. The following are a fraction of the oil paintings in the Artemaya Collection.(*) The collection is invaluable for depicting scenes of religion, customs, and daily life among the Maya in the highlands of Guatemala.
