Free City Collective
San Francisco
Fall 1967 to Spring 1968
In the late summer, 1967, some of the Diggers forcibly
appropriated the Gestetner equipment that Chester Anderson and Claude Hayward had used to
produce the Communication Company bulletins. The newly named Free City Collective used these
machines to create Free City News and other publications which supplanted the Com/Co operations. The
hard-edge writing of Anderson, and the black and white productions typical of Com/Co were
replaced by a larger (8-1/2" x 14") format, colorful designs, and more poetic
pronouncements, as well as practical notices for survival.
The Free City Collective printed and distributed these sheets (size:
8-1/2" x 14") in late-1967-to-mid-1968. Initially, there were two collections
of sheets fastened together with a square metal paper clip (Free City Set 1 and
Free City Set 2). There were also
several dozen "Free City News" single sheets with notices
and offers of and
requests for free resources. In addition, there is a whole series of
miscellaneous individual items for specific occasions or intent. The following sections
contain this vast collection of Free City publications:

Linn (Freeman) House donated his Free City collection to the Digger
Archives after a house fire where he was staying. Many of the Free
City sheets are from Freeman's collection and consequently show fire
damage to some extent. Nevertheless, we are eternally grateful for this
donation to the archive.
