DIG FURTHER: David Smith’s trip grew out of last years free digger medical shot at the Free Frame of Reference—Trip Without a Ticket. Smith was interested and in meetings with Smith diggers suggested that his proposed free clinic be away from the four block Haight syndrome so people would move around the city and break out of what was rapidly becoming a teen-age skid row. Diggers suggested a San Francisco Free Clinic (as opposed to a Haight Ashbury Free Clinic) in Fillmore, Potrero or Mission. This would have (and will) set a model for Free Community Clinics all over the city. Who wants to go to a hippie clinic??

He insisted on Haight, became the hippie doctor, which brought identity, fame and research grants to “STUDY THE HIPPIES” i.e feed information into the Great White Computer in Washington to keep them under control.

Diggers further suggested that free clinics concern themselves, in contradistinction to the city free clinics, with causes rather than symptoms (it is said by some hip pathologists that cancer is cellular paranoia.). The clinic now deals with symptoms. Cure has to do with honest to GOD MEDICINE MAN and not ego-tripping ambitious medical technologists. The H.A. trip has drained off resources and energies that could have gone into more magical medical cures.

A free clinic has to do with growing and distributing basic nourishing food. It has to do with establishing 24 hour a day 7 days a week areas free of tension and paranoia kamakazie kids, winos, crazy folk, mad men and women can be free to be whatever; an atmosphere that says at as many levels as possible WELCOME HOME: Home, family, nourishing food cures..
